Board of Directors


Chairman: Howard Ulfelder was a corporate finance executive for fifteen years, and then owned and operated a series of retail businesses for twenty five years. He is now retired and has spent five years doing pro-bono consulting for Boston-area non-profits prior to turning his passions to suggesting to the scientific community that it apply the caution of "sober second thoughts" to the unfolding of biotechnology research and development.

Karl Haigler President: Karl Haigler has more than twenty-five years of experience in education, government, and private sector consulting.  He has worked as a teacher, community college and university instructor, curriculum director and high-school principal.  Karl served on the U.S. Secretary of Education’s senior staff as a speech writer and program director in adult education.  He has worked at the highest levels of federal and state government and has also served as a consultant to federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Labor, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

 As a consultant to Fortune 500 firms, Karl has helped develop selection systems and training programs for front-line workers and managers.  He has worked internationally in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Vietnam in human resources consulting.  Karl has also authored a number of publications, including (with Rae Nelson) The Gap-Year Advantage: Helping Your Child Benefit from Time Off  Before or During College (St. Martin’s Press, 2005).  Currently, he and Rae are finishing their second book, Gap Year, American Style for Harvard University Press (Fall, 2009). Mr. Haigler has a B.A. (with honors) in politics from Wake Forest University and an M.A. in politics from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Hal Shear Treasurer: Hal Shear is President of Board Assets, Inc., which provides governance services to directors and boards. Previously he was an investment advisor to individual investors in early stage companies. He has been an investor in and served on more than 12 boards, and currently serves as an independent director of two privately-held companies. Hal regularly advises governmental authorities, CEOs and boards of directors on corporate governance matters including strategy, director recruitment, composition, selection and board, committee and director evaluation. Mr. Shear is an advisor to the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), particularly on chapter development and a member of its national faculty, teaching courses throughout the US and internationally.

Director: Carol Bradley: President, Pre-Post Irony Productions, a New York-based multi-media company. Partner, property management concern. An actress, author and humorist, Carol has a proclivity for biotechnology and her work highlights the satirical aspects of technology. Volunteer in health and education-related organizations. Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College.

Rae Nelson Director: Rae Nelson. Rae has served in high-level positions involving domestic policy. She served at the White House as Associate Director for Education Policy and as Communications Director for the Domestic Policy staff on drug abuse. As Vice President/ Executive Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Workforce Preparation, she developed national initiatives with major foundations.  Her consulting expertise in the private sector includes strategic planning, workforce policy, instructional design, and communications. Along with Karl Haigler, she co-authored The Gap-Year Advantage: Helping Your Child Benefit from Time Off Before or During College. They are currently researching their second book, Gap Year, American Style for Harvard University Press. Rae has a B.A. in English from Cornell University and an M.A. in Communications from American University.
